NGAMWA, NYERI – On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, a new chapter in community development began for Ngamwa Comprehensive School in Nyeri. The Rotary Club of Milimani - Nairobi (District 9212), in a powerful partnership with the Portland Pearl Rotary Club (USA) (District 5100), officially launched a transformative Water & Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) project designed to address the critical needs of the school and the wider Ngamwa village.
The project, funded through a The Rotary Foundation (TRF), aims to provide a sustainable and affordable water source to a community that has historically faced challenges with water access. Currently, the school and community lack a reliable source of clean water, with students often spending a great deal of time searching for water, which has led to poor academic performance. The initiative has 300 direct beneficiaries including students and staff, secondary beneficiaries up to 1000 family members, tertiary beneficiaries over 2000 community members.
The comprehensive project, with a total budget of $168,000, has three core components:

- Borehole and Water Kiosks: The project will drill a borehole powered by a solar pump on the school grounds to provide a reliable water source. It also includes the construction of two water kiosks, one at the school gate and another in the community marketplace, to supply water to residents for a fee. The proceeds from water sales will be used to maintain the project, ensuring its long-term viability.
- Ablution Block and Hygiene Room: The project will build 30 new latrines (18 for girls and 12 for boys) and a menstrual hygiene room with water taps. This will replace the six dilapidated and nearly unusable latrines currently on site and provide adequate facilities for the school's growing population, which is anticipated to increase from 300 to up to 800 students.
- WASH Program: A WASH Club will be implemented at the school to educate students on proper hygiene behaviors, including handwashing and safe waste disposal. Students will also be trained to help monitor the use of the new facilities and teach younger students proper hygiene.
The launch was attended by, among other stakeholders, the leadership and technical team from the Rotary Club of Milimani, the Rotaract Club of Milimani, the Rotaract Club of Nyeri, the school board, staff, and the local community. The project contractor, Frisco Engineering Limited, attended the groundbreaking ceremony on the first day of the project's implementation, impressing all present by successfully reaching the water table—a significant milestone that signals a strong start for the life-changing initiative.
The Ngamwa community has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to the project, having contributed funds to the hydrogeological survey and volunteered labor for digging trenches. The project will also strengthen the community's capacity to manage and maintain its own water and sanitation services through a new Water Committee.
This collaboration between the Rotary Club of Milimani and the Portland Pearl Rotary Club, championed by Voices From Africa Youth, is a testament to the power of international partnerships in creating sustainable solutions that address fundamental community needs. It is a powerful example of Rotary's commitment to improving lives and creating a healthier, more dignified future for all.
